The Century Dictionary, produced under the supervision of William Dwight Whitney who for many years was a Professor of Philology at Yale and has long been regarded as among the greatest achievers of American lexicography. First published in six volumes (1889-91), it evolved into a twelve-volume edition (1911) including supplementary volumes, a Cyclopedia of Names, and a world atlas. The later editions run to more than 8,500 three-column pages and contain more than 200,000 main entries with over 500,000 definitions. The Century is particularly noted for its etymologies, its thorough coverage of American English, its emphasis on scientific and technical terms at a time when such terms were relatively neglected by other dictionaries (including what came to be known as the OED), and its many beautiful illustrative engravings and quotations. Indeed, it remains remarkably "usable" as a dictionary to this day.

When in December 1905, the Prince of Wales hunting visit to Nepal was suddenly cancelled, the Maharaja of Gwalior was pleased to offer a five day hunting visit to Gwalior and this book is an account of that visit.

This copy has been signed and dated 1908 by the fifth Maharaja of Gwalior, Madho Rao Scindia, pp 138.

"Curry & Rice" or the Ingredients of Social Life at Our Station in India, by George Franklin Atkinson, Fifth Edition, with colour illustrations for the first time, from the original sketches by the author, London: Thacker & Co. / Calcutta & Simla: Thacker, Spink & Co., 40 plates complete with tissue guards accompanied by 2-page description for each original ornate blind stamped and gilt-embossed binding in mustard-coloured cloth after a design by Sir M. Digby Wyatt [1820-1877]. The author-illustrator was a captain in the Bengal Engineers and also published an account of his activities during the Indian Mutiny, as well as a volume of sketches of travel in northern Europe. The satirical plates, each with an accompanying two-page text, depict life at a British colonial station in India, with heavy emphasis on social and sporting activities, with several images of pompous dignitaries and of native life. The sporting plates include horse-racing, tiger-shooting, and pig-sticking.

A superb deluxe blue embossed and gilt copy of the Annexation of the Punjaub and the Maharajah Duleep Singh, 1882, by Major Evan Bell. Duleep Singh's first major biography which he commissioned the professional agitator Bell to write. The book was a direct attack on the British Government and offended many of the high ranking officials, he later apologised and published the milder account titled Duleep Singh & The Government to bring forth his financial and political case to the British public. The blue embossed copies were issued for personal friends and family, this copy containing a detailed 10-page handwritten letter from Lord Hatherton to Sir John [Login] about the Maharajah's case.

Memoirs of a Griffin or a Cadet's First Year in India, by Captain Bellew, illustrated from designs by the author, a New Edition, London: Wm H. Allen & Co, 1880. pp. x, 373 and 7 humorous lithographic plates only, out of 10. Original brown cloth with title embossed on spine in gilt and the name of "Newport Collegiate School" embossed on cover. Evidently a school prize copy since the back of ffp has details in ink about the recipient student. A novel, which comically describes the first year of a newly-arrived cadet from England, it was first published in 1843 in 2 volumes. The author was Francis John Bellew. Also includes parts of Nepal, China, Bhutan, Sumatra and Ceylon (Sri Lanka). Offers color coding according to country and region as well as notations regarding roadways, cities, towns, and river systems. Three inset maps focus on the Island of Bombay (Mumbai), Madras, and Calcutta. An view of the Government House and Treasury in Calcutta adorns the upper left corner. Features the strapwork style border common to Johnson's atlas work from 1860 to 1863. Published by A. J. A magnificent map and the rarest of the Thomson India series. This is the 1814 map of India with inset maps of the Ganges River by Edinburgh cartographer John Thomson. Depicts the whole of India from Lahore to the island of Ceylon (Sri Lanka). Left hand side of the map is dedicated to a careful mapping of the Ganges River. Includes a cross'section of the Ganges, a map of the course of the Ganges in the dry season, and a map of the Inland Navigations routes along the river from the Bay of Bengal to Allahabad. This map's magnificent size, beautiful color, and high detail make this one of the finest maps of this region to appear in the early 19th century. Dated 1814.

NORTHERN HINDOSTAN; This fascinating hand colored 1814 map by Edinburgh cartographer John Thomson depicts northern India and Nepal. Bounded on the east by Persia and the Indus valley, on the North by Tibet, on the south by Berar, and on the east by Assam and Bhutan. Much of the upper portion of this map includes a detailed inset of the Kingdom of Nepal or Nepaul. This area is depicted in impressive detail considering that, when this map was printed very few western travelers had ever been to Nepal. Includes roads, mountain passes and the residences of important Lamas. Extends fully into the Tibetan plateau as far as Te Shoo Loomboo and the Road to Lhasa (Lassa). The right hand corner of this map contains an inset of Kabul or Cabul. Date 1814.
