The Century Dictionary, produced under the supervision of William Dwight Whitney who for many years was a Professor of Philology at Yale and has long been regarded as among the greatest achievers of American lexicography. First published in six volumes (1889-91), it evolved into a twelve-volume edition (1911) including supplementary volumes, a Cyclopedia of Names, and a world atlas. The later editions run to more than 8,500 three-column pages and contain more than 200,000 main entries with over 500,000 definitions. The Century is particularly noted for its etymologies, its thorough coverage of American English, its emphasis on scientific and technical terms at a time when such terms were relatively neglected by other dictionaries (including what came to be known as the OED), and its many beautiful illustrative engravings and quotations. Indeed, it remains remarkably "usable" as a dictionary to this day.

Tom Raw, The Griffin: A Burlesque Poem, in Twelve Cantos: Illustrated by TWENTY-FIVE ENGRAVINGS descriptive of the adventures of a cadet in the East India Company's service, from the period of his quitting England to his obtaining a staff situation in India. By a civilian and an officer of the Bengal establishment, the artist was SIR CHARLES D'OYLY (1781-1845) London: Printed for R. Ackermann 1828, pp. 325 + 25 engravings which are hand-coloured caricatures, showing the humorous side of British life in India. A lovely copy in half leather with marbled boards and endpapers, the spine has raised bands with gilt designs and title.

Original dark green binding with beautiful gold-embossed picture on cover showing a six-armed goddess Kali and serpents at her feet and the gilt-embossed spine showing the title and a serpent-charmer. Edges and corners a little worn, one plate loose. However, a fine example of a lavish Victorian cloth binding.

The naturalist Pierre Sonnerat published in 1782 his “Journey to the Indies Eastern and China”, made since 1774 up to 1781 per Mr. Sonnerat, Paris, Froule etc, 1782, illustrated on eighty boards, drawn by Sonnerat and engraved by Poisson. The engravings are divided into three books.140 engraved plates. A Ceylon, Malacca, the Philippines, & the Maldives. The plates, beautifully engraved by Poisson after drawings by the author, are mostly of birds, flora & fauna, but include customs, religion, sciences and arts. Mysore War, set of 7 engravings +6 of them by French soldier Claude Martin of Lucknow + 1 print of Tipu Sultan by another artist based in Lucknow and aged 56 at the time. Martin had traveled to Madras to take part in the protracted Second Mysore War which resulted in the surrender by Tipu Sultan at Seringapatam in 1792. His role was largely in relation to reconnoitering. That is when he must have made these sketches. These are all 21 x 13 cms and were published in various issues of "European Magazine" in 1792. No. 6 must have had the Martin credit but it looks like the print was clumsily cut at the bottom at some stage. Nos. 1 - 3 matted within one frame, Nos. 4 - 7 matted within one frame.

CONDITION
Original worn, but highly decorative and gilt embossed binding remains. However, the text pages are very brittle with occasional loss of text and the original fine Woodbury types have also occasionally suffered due to the brittleness of their mounts. Of the 44 Woodbury type portraits, each bearing the credit line of Vincent Brooke Day & Son, London - only 26 are present. These are in various states of damage and repair along margins but the images themselves in most cases remain unscathed. Most portraits relate to Bombay gentry, 8 of them being of Parsis.

The plates, beautifully engraved by Poisson after drawings by the author, are mostly of birds, flora & fauna, but include customs, religion, sciences and arts.

(The Relief of Lucknow, & triumphant meeting of Havelock. Ottam, Sir Colin Campbell)
The Indian mutiny in 1857 was the first sign of British disaffection against British rule. It erupted at Meerut, near Delhi, and spread rapidly across north India. At Lucknow, the European and Christian population retired into the heavily fortified british Residency, guarded by a small force of loyal sepoys. Finally, in mid' November, Colin Campbell, commande 'in' chief, conducted the exhausted garrison out of the city. It was not finally episode in British military annals. The print after Thomas Jones Barker's painting in the National Gallery in London portrays the encounter between the three most popular heroes of the campaign. Colin Campbell, James Outram, and General Sir Henry Havelock.
