This still life painting by Souza mirrors the vibrancy and bold colours that are so familiar in all his works. The thick impasto of the blue leafed plant with red and pink roses in the saffron-coloured vase placed on a blood red table against glorious ochre is fascinating for its rough beauty and a certain emotional honesty, recalling the Dutch impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh.
