Osborne, The Court and Camp of Runjeet Sing [sic], with an introductory sketch of the origin and rise of the Sikh state, Henry Colburn, London, 1840, sixteen engravings including Ranjit Singh on horseback, Sher Singh, Akali, Sikh Armour, Fakirs, 236 pp., black 2/4 calf with red leather label gilt, 218 x 145 mm. William Osborne was military secretary to the Governor General, his uncle Lord Auckland. In May 1838 he was sent to Ranjit Singh's court in Lahore to make arrangements for the later British mission there.

    THE ANNEXATION OF THE PUNJAUB AND THE MAHARAJAH DULEEP SINGH

    A superb deluxe blue embossed and gilt copy of the Annexation of the Punjaub and the Maharajah Duleep Singh, 1882, by Major Evan Bell. Duleep Singh's first major biography which he commissioned the professional agitator Bell to write. The book was a direct attack on the British Government and offended many of the high ranking officials, he later apologised and published the milder account titled Duleep Singh & The Government to bring forth his financial and political case to the British public. The blue embossed copies were issued for personal friends and family, this copy containing a detailed 10-page handwritten letter from Lord Hatherton to Sir John [Login] about the Maharajah's case.
