MAGNIFICENT BURMESE RUBY AND FINE SAPPHIRE MANGAMALA (NECKLACE)

SOUTH INDIA, c. 1880, comprising of forty mango-shaped pendants with large uncut white sapphires (pukhraj), weighing approximately 55 carats, surrounded with old and very fine quality pigeon blood colour Burmese rubies weighing approximately 110 carats in descending order, truly a craftsmanship of traditional goldsmiths of Madurai, TAMIL NADU, with a very elegant central pendant with rubies and a single Columbian emerald to ward off evil eye, a practice prevalent in those days.
