JOGEN CHOWDHURY (B. 1939)

Jogen Chowdhury is one of the prominent figurative painters in India from Bengal. He has a distinctive style of painting and his images have a stark and iconic graphic quality. His unbroken lines are spontaneous and focus on the image, leaving all other superfluous details out.
Chowdhury developed this extra-ordinary style by looking at the folk art of his region (the 'pat' paintings) and gave them a contemporary twist. His works depict flowers, exotic fruits, animals and birds. His images of people focus on the tensions of relationships between them.
