Durga. 'The inaccessible'. Wife of Shiva and an aspect of Devi in her more menancing forms. She is shown normally on a lion or tiger, her ten arms holding the weapons of the gods. Among the many demons killed by her, the buffalo demon, Mahisasura, was chief (WG Archer, Kalighat Paintings, London, 1971).
