Provenance

From the private collection of Mrs. Sumitra Devi Birla of Kolkata, who inherited it from her late husband Mr. Gajanan Birla , who bought it from an auction in the early 1960s. The sale proceeds from this lot will go to a charity in memory of her husband and son Mr. Madhukar Birla.

Details

A very rare and fine gilt bronze figure of Amitabha seated in dhynasana on a stepped throne, hands in a bhumisparsamudra holding the kalasha, clad in a elaborate patchwork sanghati incised with floral motifs, the face with heavy-lidded eyes, elongated ear lobes, the hair in tight curls pulled over usnisha and topped with a knop, surmounted by finial backed by a foliate torana, flanked on either side with Tara / Devi seated in a dhyanasana on a stepped throne, the primary hands in anjalimudra the upper two in tarjanimudra, clad in a dhoti with incised patterning adorned with various ornaments, head secured with an elaborate tiara and finial backed by a foliate torana.
