Meena Appachu - A collector of all things Beautiful!
The wife of an Indian Air Force Officer, (late) Mrs. Meena Appachu, was from Coorg. This brief note, filled with nostalgia, from one of her daughters, who is a former model, sums up the gist of the collection on offer:
“Our mother, was happiest buying beautiful objects for the house, in particular porcelain on which she was laser focused and obsessive. One trip to Italy, had all of us getting shoe bites, but she decided she wanted to find something for her collection. Exhausting!
How did she get there?
It started when I was not even born, her first acquisition of a pair of vases from an antique store in Jamnagar in Gujarat when my father was posted there and we had to do up our home. Bronze, glass, porcelain, copper, stained glass, cut glass and wood - all was bought - somethings from the Charminar locality in Hyderabad, others from Chor Bazar in Mumbai and then from her trips around Europe - Italy, England, France …south-east Asia too……… mother was a hoarder, gifts bought for others were never given. She became quite a known collector around Mysuru and most dealers were well acquainted with her.
My sister and me are lucky, real lucky to have been taught early about things of beauty. She lives on forever in her beautiful collection, a part of which we want to give away if not for logistical reasons but for others to now enjoy and cherish”
